Our partner, Esri™, is the world’s leading provider of geographic information systems (GIS) software, allowing organizations to leverage location intelligence to increase transparency and provide near-time data updates. By connecting your Appia® and ArcGIS Online accounts, you can use Esri’s GIS, mapping, and dashboard functionality to visualize your Appia project data and track all your project activity in one hub.
We have compiled our instructional videos for connecting and using Esri and ArcGIS with your Appia service. Watch as we guide you through setting your project location in Appia, connecting to your ArcGIS Online account, and navigating the integration.
You can watch the videos in order like a short training course, or skip to the ones you need by using the navigational sidebar. If you prefer a written guide, expand the drop-down sections below.
Connect your Appia service to Esri and ArcGIS Online
To set up the integration and connection to your ArcGIS online account:
- Select the System Management > Integrations tab. You’ll see a screen with two options for connecting to your Esri account: a button that says “Connect with ArcGIS Online” or a login for your ArcGIS Portal.
- Click on the blue button that says Connect with ArcGIS Online.
- In the Request for Permission pop-up, sign in to your Esri account and click Allow.
- You should now see your ArcGIS username in the top-right corner of the screen, and options to toggle on Feature Services in the middle. This is the integration between Appia and Esri, specifically with ArcGIS online.
- Once you enable the Feature Service(s), data from your Appia projects will be pushed to Esri every day at 4 am or whenever you manually refresh the data.
Turn on Feature Service(s) to send your Appia project data to Esri
Once you connect to Esri, you must turn on the Feature Service(s) to tell us what type of Appia project data to send to Esri. There are two Feature Services: Multi Project Overview and Multi Project Overview with Project Items.
When you toggle the Multi Project Overview feature service to ON, the Appia service will automatically send Esri the project overview, time limit, and funding data for all projects with coordinates. This feature service is ideal for giving a broad, high-level overview of your project’s major data points.
The Multi Project Overview with Project Items feature service sends all of the same data packages as the first feature, with two additional packages: item data and item posting data. This feature is best for providing stakeholders with granular insight into your Appia project on the item level and bringing the highest level of transparency.
To see a full list of data sent over with each feature, expand the section below.
What types of data are sent to Esri?
The Multi Project Overview feature sends to Esri the following data for all Appia projects with coordinates:
The Multi Project Overview with Project Items feature sends to Esri all of the above data, plus the following item data:
Turn off Esri Feature Service(s) or disconnect your Appia account
You can stop the daily data transfer or disconnect your Appia account from Esri completely. Both actions affect all of your business accounts that connect to Esri.
There are two ways to stop transferring data.
- Turn off the feature service: Your Appia account is still connected to Esri, but the daily data won’t transfer until the feature service is turned back on.
- Disconnect: Your Appia account is completely disconnected from Esri. You’ll be required to make a completely new connection when you reconnect, making your previous connection unusable.
Turn off feature service
When you turn off the feature service, Esri won't get any new data from the Appia service until you turn the feature service on again.
- From the Feature Services page, click theOntoggle option to turn it to Off.
Turn the feature service on again to continue transferring your Appia project data.
Disconnect feature service
Don’t disconnect from your business if turning off the feature service would work instead. If you disconnect and then reconnect, you’ll be required to make an entirely new connection, creating a new feature service in your Esri account. Your previous account will still be there, but you won’t be able to use it.
Disconnect your business from your Esri account if you need to change a user. If it's for other reasons, turn off the feature service instead.
- Click Disconnect from the Feature Services page.
Your Appia account will disconnect from Esri.
